Programming Language

YOUNA — our own universal programming language

Why we built a language of our own, and what it can do.

One language for everything

YOUNA is a general-purpose programming language designed and authored by our founder, Muhammad Basharat, and named in honour of his father, Muhammad Younas. The idea behind it is simple to say and hard to build: the developer describes what should happen, and YOUNA determines how to execute it efficiently and safely. One language covers web, desktop, mobile, AI, images, video, audio, databases, networking, blockchain and systems programming — the whole stack we build products on.

Programs live in .you files and run with zero setup: the toolchain is dependency-free, requires no build step, and every diagnostic carries a source position with a "did you mean" hint — error quality is treated as a core language feature, not an afterthought.

Three engines, one truth

Most languages have one implementation and hope for the best. YOUNA has three engines whose behaviour is enforced identical by the test suite:

  • AST interpreter — the reference semantics every other engine must match
  • IR evaluator — a second engine running lowered intermediate representation
  • JS code generator — compiles YOUNA to JavaScript at native speed (~27x the interpreter on benchmarks)

A WASM subset backend exists alongside them, and the compiler is self-hosting — there is a full YOUNA compiler written in YOUNA that passes the same parity tests.

A modern language, end to end

The language itself is built for real software:

  • Static type checking before every run — Int, Float, Bool, String, Arrays, Maps, Functions
  • Option<T> and Result<T,E> types for honest, compile-checked absence and failure
  • try/catch/finally, throw, break/continue, string interpolation
  • Real modules with a standard library written in YOUNA itself

Concurrency that's actually automatic

YOUNA's compiler analyses loops and automatically parallelises the ones it can prove safe — no annotations, no data races, sequential error order preserved. For explicit concurrency there is spawn, await_task, parallel for, and spawn_worker which offloads work onto real OS threads. Profiling is built into the CLI.

Safe by default

A YOUNA program declares the permissions it needs — filesystem, network, notifications and more — and the runtime enforces them. Capabilities are real gates, not advisory comments: code that touches the filesystem without declaring it simply cannot run. Permissions flow all the way into generated native projects — Android manifest entries and iOS usage descriptions are produced automatically.

A runtime that covers the whole product

YOUNA ships with capability runtimes most languages would call separate ecosystems — all written by us, dependency-free:

  • Media — image, audio and video values with hand-written BMP, PPM, WAV and Y4M codecs
  • AI — n-dimensional tensors, broadcasting, dense neural-network model stacks, save/load
  • Databases — built-in SQLite plus a hand-implemented MySQL wire protocol
  • Web — a real HTTP server builtin: handlers, query parsing, structured responses
  • Graphics — a 2D software rasterizer and a full 3D pipeline (clipping, z-buffer, Lambert shading)
  • Blockchain — proof-of-work ledger primitives and real ed25519 signatures

The full toolchain

YOUNA comes with the tooling a professional language needs: formatter, debugger, language server (LSP), REPL, watch mode, package manager, project scaffolding and test runner — plus a platform registry so one codebase builds to Web, Windows, Linux, macOS executables, Android APKs and iOS/iPadOS apps, with device APIs like device_info, sensors and notify.

Why we built it

Every product we ship — visitor management, inventory, security operations, social platforms — sits on foundations owned by someone else. YOUNA is part of our answer: an ecosystem where the language, the graphics language (YOUNA GFX), the video codec (Teleport), the blockchain (YounaCoin) and the operating system (YOU) are all ours, engineered to work together.
